Same-Sex Couple Married Out-Of-State, Now Wants Divorce in Tennessee, But Can’t

Divorce

A same-sex couple married out-of-town, now living in Memphis, TN, has filed the ‘first ever’ divorce by a same-sex couple in Shelby County courts.

Same-sex Memphis couple Wendy Jones and Lisa Frommel got married in New Hampshire back in October 2011, according to divorce documents.

The couple now wants a divorce in Tennessee but the state does not recognize same-sex marriages.

Apparently the two wish to separate based on irreconcilable differences.

In order for Tennessee to grant the couple a divorce, Tennessee would first have to recognize their marriage as valid, which currently may not be done unless the state legalizes same-sex marriage.

The couple could however get a divorce where they were married in New Hampshire, but the problem is New Hampshire laws state that they would have to live there for a year before they could be granted a divorce.

Jones and Frommel are currently seeking out their options to have their divorce granted in Tennessee.
