Everything’s Going Up But Pay! MLGW To Increase Bills To Cover Street Lights in Memphis

City Street Lights

MLGW is planning to raise the cost of utility bills for Memphis residents to cover the costs of street lights.

See, at first, street lights were covered by property tax dollars, but that’s when they were owned by the City of Memphis.

In short, ownership of street lights were transferred to MLGW with the help of the city council and now MLGW has added a new fee, approved by the city, to cover streetlights maintenance and operation.

Reportedly, apartment residents will be paying $1.08 more a month, while home residents’ bill will go up $4.32 more.

If you’ve been following the news, this now means reportedly in the past six months, there’s been a new Memphis property tax increase, a water rate increase, a sales tax increase to fund pre-K, and now a fee for street lights, all on top of a recent federal income tax increase.

Gives new meaning to “everything is going up but the pay rates,” but according to this report, that may soon change as Obama proposes a minimum wage increase from $7.25 to $10.
