Rapper J. Cole Writes Apology Letter For Autism Lyrics in Jodeci, Drake Follows Suit

J. Cole and Drake apologize for autism lyrics in Jodeci Freestyle

J. Cole felt the need to be apologetic after rapping lyrics that referenced autism when he compared himself as being artistic and his peers being autistic.

The criticism of J. Cole’s lyrics came shortly after Drake released the collaboration song titled “Jodeci Freestyle.”

In the song, the line that resulted in complaints against J. Cole from organizations and those suffering from or taking care of those with autism goes, “I’m artistic, you n–gas is autistic, retarded…”

On his website DreamVillain, J. Cole issued a statement titled “Autism Speaks” and stated that sometimes things that are said may ruffle feathers and some rappers may be pressured into apologizing due to the media, but in his case this wasn’t the issue and he felt it was necessary.

J. Cole admits that he said something highly offensive to people with Autism and after seeing a comment from someone outraged, he realized something was wrong.

“I realized right away that what I said was wrong. I was instantly embarrassed that I would be ignorant enough say something so hurtful. What makes the crime worse is that I should have known better.”

In J. Cole’s seven paragraph post, he ended with a message to parents who are taking care of children with severe autism and as well as college students Asperger’s Syndrome and those who are enduring autism.

Meanwhile, Drake also issued an apology due to the responsibility he shared in the song and stated he would remove the lyrics from the song.

“This was a learning lesson for both of us, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to try to right this wrong. J. Cole and I believe that it is the right, responsible, and respectful decision to remove the lyric from the song.”
