City Wants To Shut Down Church-run Tenn. Nightclub After 9 People Shot at Christmas Party

A Tennessee church-run youth nightclub may be in jeopardy of being shut down by the city, after nine people were wounded in a shooting at a Christmas party.

The city of Chattanooga is asking the local courts for an order to shut down Club Fathom after a shooting on Christmas morning injured at least nine people.

Apparently a fight broke at the Chattanooga nightclub Club Fathom, where some 400 teens and adults were attending a Christmas party, leading to gun shots and at least 9 people being wounded from the shots.

The city says that this isn’t the first time that violence has struck the club, claiming Chattanooga police have responded to at least 19 assault calls over the past five years, including 2 other shootings and even a statutory rape call.

Details of the alleged fight at the club which sparked the gunshots have not been detailed, but the 9 victims fortunately, all survived, but the lifespan of the club may not.

As it stands, the club may not even be able to go through with a planned New Year’s Eve concert because the city’s complaint is also asking for a restraining order to prevent the New Year’s Eve event.

Mosaic church, who operates the club and claims to be a ministry to at-risk youth released the following news release on yesterday, regarding the incident:

What happened this past Christmas weekend was a tragedy and an ambush. The shootings were not two rival gangs fighting. We at Mosaic know that gang members seek retaliation against many of our young people who have walked away from the gang lifestyle and have pledged to join our church’s GANG (Gathering of New Generation). We proactively protect against these realities by always having off-duty police officers and professional security at all of our outreach events. None of our youth at the Christmas party that night had weapons on them. They were searched before entering the church and were not weapons of any kind used in anyway inside at our event. When we dismissed the Christmas dance at 11:45PM (because curfew on Saturday nights at 12AM) all 400 of our youth left in an orderly fashion preparing to go home. What we did not know was that violent gang members were waiting in ambush outside our church (driving by in cars and on the street) for our youth that night or that they would open fire on innocent bystanders when our youth left the dance. Our youth were the victims in this tragedy. Our youth have chosen to walk away from the gang lifestyle, but they remain in harm’s way because of the violence of Chattanooga’s current gang members. Again, the shootings were not two rival gangs; rather a violent Chattanooga gang ambush our church’s non violent “GANG” (Gathering a New Generation) (those who have chosen to walk away from the gang lifestyle and chosen a new life and community in Jesus Christ).
