Tupac’s Mother Speech ‘Brings Heat’ In Memphis Dream Reborn Conference

Afeni Shakur, mother of the late legendary rapper and Hip Hop icon, Tupac Shakur, recently made a speech in Memphis at the Dream Reborn Conference and brought what some are calling ‘the heat’.

“Everything, I’m about to tell you is because of God’s Glory,” started Afeni Shakur at the beginning of her speech. “April 4th, 1968 Dr. Reverend Martin Luther King was murdered in this place, [and] that started something in this country. April 2nd 1969, 363 days later, 21 Black Panthers was arrested in New York City– 1 year later. So, the other day I just celebrated 39 years of my arrest in where did I celebrate it at– Virginia Tech, Virginia Tech. Yes! There’s so much healing to be done in our places…,” she continued.

Afeni went on to ask, “Where are the women?,” and encouraged them to tell their stories as she continued to share her story with them.

“I want to share with you that in Lumberton, North Carolina where not only I was born, my mother was born and my grandmother was born, my great grandmother was born and my great great grandmother was born in the county Robeson, we have 56 acres of land — we have 17 acres of organic land and we’re selling crops organically. We have cows and we have chickens, cause I was serious about mine and if you’re serious about it, this is what you’ll do. I’m not saying that to brag, no I’m saying that if you don’t have the 56 and if you don’t have 17, I need you to get down with us. You talking about you got some organ [organization] and I want to do something. You ought to be doing something connected to some land… we got to have land, we got to have ground and we can’t just have jobs. Can we please, please beg yah, when yall talking about all them jobs, I’m not interested in them… I want you to get some executive courses, I want you teach my people how to run businesses… there is no reason why we got to be talking all the time about jobs, instead of about companies, why not. Can we please dream big! We were doing jobs back then–let’s dream big…that’s all I’m asking you,” Afeni said strongly amidst cheers from the crowd.

“When 2Pac died in 1996, I had 5 years clean. I done told you I was a high school dropout. Why were we able to do this? Know why? You can do it too… Jesus, show me what to do and guess what happens every time I do that– I’m telling you that.. if ain’t nobody shared that with you, let me tell you– you need to ask the Lord to show you what to do next.. then you need to ‘do the next’ like you believe it’s gonna happen.. that’s the joy I want to see,” she added.

Afeni continued to ‘raise the heat’ as she went on to say she doesn’t want to be in a battle with a soldier — a “coward soldier” — and stated “I am inviting ya’ll to be in God’s army” to “fight for his Earth” because he created it and nobody should act like they made nothing “but a problem” and insured everyone that no one has to agree with her because (as she put it) “you don’t have to agree with me about nothing, I’m good! All by myself–I don’t need nobody to agree with me, but my opinion counts and I will be heard!”.

She also extended an invitation for anyone to visit her Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation in Georgia. Afeni founded the Georgia-based Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation one year after Tupac Shakur’s death and the foundation provides art programs for talented young people.

Since her son’s death, Afeni Shakur has overseen Tupac’s unreleased material and has been a major factor in the sales of millions of Tupac albums. Afeni has also since launched a fashion clothing line, Makaveli Branded which, according to Afeni, proceeds go to the charity, the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation and Arts Center.
