Memphis Tigers Beat Texas-Arlington 87-63

At the first-round match-up out of the South Regional on Friday the University of Memphis Tigers won against Texas-Arlington Mavericks with 87-63.

With only one loss under their belt, at the first-round match-up out of the South Regional on Friday the University of Memphis Tigers won against Texas-Arlington Mavericks with 87-63. Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 23 points, Antonio Anderson added 17 and freshman Derrick Rose scored 17 points as well as seven rebounds and four assists.

“I never underestimated them because they’re a tournament team,” Douglas-Roberts said. “We’ve all seen before, teams get upset in close games throughout the tournament. This is the type of game we needed in the first round. It shows how the rest of the tournament is going to be. The next game is going to be even tougher game. I’m glad they came out and challenged us, and they really did compete.”

Although the Tigers didn’t go unnoticed for missing more than a half-dozen dunks and layups, they managed to keep their defense tight.

Now 34-1, the Tigers has advanced to the NCAA tournament’s second round, where they’ll face Mississippi State Sunday afternoon in Little Rock, March 23, 2008. The University of Memphis Tigers will meet the No. 8 seed Mississippi State (23-10, 12-4 SEC) at the Little Rock’s Alltel Arena.
