The City of Memphis has risen to a standing ovation for Bill Gates as he has donated $90 Million to the city's schools!!
Bill Gates, real name William Henry "Bill" Gates III, 54, co-Founder of Microsoft has given Memphis City Schools a $90 Million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as well as $1.9 million in companion funds.
This is the largest donation to Memphis City Schools in all the history of Memphis!
"This is huge, this is huge, this puts Memphis City Schools in very elite territory, on the front page of the nation. Teachers are the most important single factor in the education of a child," said Supt. Kriner Cash, reported The Commercial Appeal.
Considering Memphis City Schools state report card showed D's and F's, the funds will go toward better teaching as well as books and programs aimed to make learning in the schools more effective.
Unanimously, the board voted in a decision to accept the money intended to improve teaching in the district.
"This is not just for Memphis City Schools, this is for everyone in the city of Memphis," said board president Martavius Jones,
Not only did Gates give $90 Million to the schools, he also gave $1.9 Million for the city schools to video the work of 1,000 teachers under the guidance of Harvard economist Thomas Kane.
The videos will help lay the foundation for a seven-year project that will raise the teaching level in Memphis City Schools. Under the plan, the most dedicated teachers will be moved to inner-city classrooms where they will be needed the most, hopefully ending the school system’s decades-long rut of dismal achievement records.
"We've watched the entire community come together around what we consider the most important challenge we face today," she said. "All the youth of every city, but particularly in the Memphis community, have a right to an effective teacher," says Colleen Oliver, Gates Foundation senior program officer.
Bill Gates and wife, Melinda have donated over $2 Billion to improve high schools as well as $2 Billion in scholarships in the U.S. since 2002, making them the largest investors in public education.
