Jabari Oliver - Associate Music Reviewer Territories:
jabari.oliver[at]memphisrap.com
Jabari Oliver, currently an account executive for the Philadelphia's 103 The Beat, has deep-rooted musical groundings that was birthed from watching his father, a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology, critique and study what is known as Delta Blues. From this exposure Jabari learned how to explain music from a psychological perspective and garnered the ability to forecast trends of hip-hop music. He began his illustrious writing career as an early teen where he became a published poet and eventually garnered 3 different publications in respectable hard-covered national anthologies. During this period, Jabari would watch his father produce countless rap albums in his recording studio with artists from Memphis and the North Mississippi area. He honed his writing skills under the supervision of his mother, a Ph.D. Doctor of Education, and used his abilities to get into Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans where he majored in English and later transferred to Rust College in Holly Springs where he majored in Mass Communications. There he served as a staff writer for the “Rustorian” newspaper and also served as an on-air personality for the school’s radio station, WURC-FM. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in broadcast journalism, Jabari began his media career as an account executive for Power99/WMPW-FM, a hip-hop radio station. That allowed him to be surrounded by music. Jabari believes “Music is life and life is music, everybody has their own soundtrack or song with its own flow, routine, rhythm, rhyme or reason that composes their identity.” He dedicates his grind to his younger sister, a better future, and the “struggle” itself.
