“The Memphis music industry just got a great boost,” says former Stax Records CEO, Al Bell, who serves as the Memphis Music Foundation’s Chairman.

The legendary music executive is referring to the announcement of two Memphis music organizations merging together as one.

The Memphis Music Foundation and The Consortium Memphis Music Town have announced this week that they are merging their two organizations together.

The new organization will continue to use the name The Consortium MMT, which was founded by the soul music Hall of Fame songwriter and producer David Porter, while continuing to house the Memphis Music Resource Center (MRC) at the Consortium MMT.

Porter himself will remain as chairman and president of The Consortium MMT, while Al Bell is set to serve on the board as a director.

David Porter stated the following regarding the merger:

“With this merger, we can capitalize on the global credibility Memphis already has earned due to our contribution to soul music. The Consortium MMT has already created buzz throughout the industry and with the addition of the Music Resource Center at The Consortium MMT, we’ll open doors for more genres of Memphis music while still focusing on soul.”

“Serious artists of all genres deserve community support to help them advance their talents and opportunities. Our energy is on those ready to move forward.”

Along with housing the Memphis Music Resource Center, the Consortium MMT will also establish the Talent Development Center, which will actually be the new home of the MRC and the Consortium MMT’s “Emerging Stars Network” program.

The new merger is set to be finalized in a few weeks as Dean Deyo, who headed up the Memphis Music Foundation as president, will be retiring this month.
