The bodies of 40-year-old pro wrestler Chris Benoit, his wife, Nancy Benoit, 43, and their seven-year-old son, Daniel, were discovered by police in their Atlanta, Georgia, home at about 2.30pm on Monday.

His employers reportedly got concerned after he was replaced at the last minute because of a “family emergency” for a pay-per-view title fight on Sunday night in Houston, Texas. Due to the concern the police were asked to check in on the former world heavyweight champion where the three were found dead.

There were no signs of gunshot or stab wounds, but the “instruments of death were located on scene”, Tommy Pope of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department told reporters. Police are now considering it a “possible double-murder suicide” he said.

A friend of the family stated that he was very happy with his wife and he loved his son Daniel and that it would be very uncharacteristic of wrestler Chris Benoit to do anything self-destructive. The close friend finds it hard to believe that he would end his life or his family’s.

His wife was a former wrestling valet who wrestled under the name “Woman”.

Currently authorities are awaiting the autopsies to determine the possible cause of death. The toxicology reports will not become available for at least two weeks.

Benoit’s death comes shortly after the death of former WWE wrestler “Sensational” Sherri Martel who died on June 15.
